Archetype Impulse theme ADA lawsuit and accessibility fix

Impulse by Archetype Themes

Impulse is a feature-rich theme with mega menus, quick-view modals and a sticky add-to-cart bar. Rich interactive features are where keyboard and screen-reader problems tend to show up in complaints. We check each one on a duplicate of your theme and fix what we can change.

Three barriers we check for in Impulse stores

These are patterns commonly raised in website accessibility complaints about stores built on themes like Impulse. Whether your store has them depends on your theme version, your edits and your apps, so we confirm each one in a free theme scan before anything is fixed. File names below are typical locations and vary by version.

  1. Barrier 1 of 3

Mega menu that cannot be opened or exited by keyboard

    Representative allegation

Plaintiff could not open the navigation submenus using only a keyboard and could not reach product categories.

WCAG 2.1.1 Keyboard, 2.4.3 Focus Order, 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value

    Typical location: snippets/site-nav.liquid

    How a plaintiff tests it

Tab to a top-level menu item, try Enter, Space and arrow keys, and check whether submenu links are reachable and whether the expanded state is announced.

    How we fix it

Expose each parent item as a button with an expanded state, make submenu links reachable in order, and let Escape close the menu and return focus to its button.

  2. Barrier 2 of 3

Quick-view modal that does not trap or return focus

    Representative allegation

After opening a quick view, focus stayed on the page behind it and the plaintiff could not close the window.

WCAG 2.4.3 Focus Order, 2.1.2 No Keyboard Trap, 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value

    Typical location: snippets/product-quick-view.liquid

    How a plaintiff tests it

Open quick view with the keyboard, press Tab, and see whether focus moves into the modal, stays there, and comes back to the trigger on close.

    How we fix it

Use dialog semantics with an accessible name, move focus in, contain Tab, close on Escape, and restore focus to the quick-view button.

  3. Barrier 3 of 3

Sticky add-to-cart bar with unlabeled controls

    Representative allegation

Quantity and add-to-cart controls had no accessible names, and the plaintiff was not told when an item was added.

WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text Content, 3.3.2 Labels or Instructions, 4.1.3 Status Messages

    Typical location: sections/product-template.liquid

    How a plaintiff tests it

Tab through the sticky bar with a screen reader, listen for control names, then add an item and listen for any confirmation.

    How we fix it

Add accessible names to icon-only controls and a polite status message that announces when an item is added.
